 Moonis Elahi says a section of the government opposed to the Chaudhrys of Gujrat is engaged in a smear campaign against them by implicating him in the mega land purchase scandal of the National Insurance Company Limited (NICL). “This lobby is working in cahoots with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) to politically victimize me for obvious reasons,” the MPA son of PML-Q Punjab President Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi told The News. He said not the entire government but a part of it, which was averse to the Chaudhrys’ politics in Gujrat, was behind the entire campaign that was being carried out and the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) was being used for this objective. Moonis Elahi stated that to say that he was not available to receive the so called questionnaire of the FIA was incomprehensible. “My home address in Lahore is well known, and everybody is aware of it. I can be approached there easily.” The PML-Q leader said if anybody wanted to arrest him, he was available and was not fleeing anywhere. “We have no doubt that the campaign has clear political motives,” he charged. As far as his friendship with Mohsin Warraich, a main absconding accused in the NICL scandal, is concerned, Moonis Elahi said, he is one of the friends. “But acquaintance with him doesn’t mean I am involved in his dealings. I am being punished merely because I have been his friend,” he said, adding that he was not talking about the character or dealings of the accused.
